West Virginia Real Estate Agent / Broker Continuing Education Requirements
Requirements Overview
The West Virginia Real Estate Commission requires 7 hours of continuing education per fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) for all active licensees. Salespersons have full flexibility — any 7 hours of WVREC-approved courses satisfy the requirement with no mandatory topic restrictions. Starting in fiscal year 2024, brokers and associate brokers must include 3 hours of broker-level CE within their 7-hour total, with the remaining 4 hours as general CE.
Licensees cannot repeat a course with the same title and content for two consecutive renewal periods (2 years), so course selection must vary year over year. Course exams require a 70% minimum passing score with a maximum of 2 attempts; failing both requires repurchasing and retaking the entire course.
Several exemptions exist: new licensees who passed exams during their first renewal fiscal year are exempt if renewing by June 30, licensees continuously renewing since July 1, 1969 are exempt, and inactive status licensees have no CE obligation. Non-residents may use reciprocal credits if their home jurisdiction has comparable requirements.
Mandatory Topics
| Topic | Hours | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broker-Level CE | 3 | Every renewal | Required for brokers and associate brokers only. Must be broker-level courses within the 7-hour total. Effective fiscal year 2024. |

Tips for West Virginia Real Estate Agents
- Brokers and associate brokers must now include 3 hours of broker-level CE — verify your course is classified as broker-level before enrolling.
- You cannot repeat the same course title two years in a row, so keep records of what you took last year when selecting this year's courses.
- You get only 2 exam attempts per course at a 70% threshold — review material thoroughly before testing to avoid repurchasing the course.
- Submit your license application by June 15 and renew by June 30 to stay active for the next fiscal year.
