West Virginia licenses land surveyors through a dedicated Board of Professional Surveyors — separate from the engineering board — and its rules run on an annual renewal cycle. Every licensee must acquire 8 PDH units for each renewal year as a prerequisite to renewing (W. Va. C.S.R. §23-2-3).
Two subjects are mandatory on a longer clock. Within every four-year span, you must complete at least 2 PDH in minimum technical standards and at least 2 PDH in professional ethics for land surveyors. These four hours count toward your annual totals but must appear within each four-year window.
Excess effort is not wasted: if you exceed the annual requirement, up to 8 PDH units may be carried forward into the next renewal period. A range of exemptions exists — new licensees by examination (first renewal period), active military duty, documented hardship, long foreign assignment, and retired status — and nonresident licensees may instead certify compliance with their home state's requirements.

Exemptions
- New Licensees (By Examination) — New licensees by way of examination are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirements for their first renewal period.
- Active Military Duty — Licensees on active duty in the U.S. Armed forces for more than 120 consecutive days during the renewal year are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirement for that year.
- Disability, Illness, Or Hardship — Licensees experiencing physical disability, illness, or other extenuating circumstances may request an exemption with supporting documentation, subject to Board approval.
- Foreign Assignment — Licensees assigned outside the United States for more than 120 consecutive days during the renewal year while employed as a professional are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirement for that year.
- Retired Status — Licensees who list ‘Retired’ on the renewal form and certify they receive no remuneration from surveying services are exempt from the continuing professional competency requirement. A returning practitioner must make up the required hours for up to two prior years.
- Nonresident Reciprocity — A nonresident licensee may certify compliance with the continuing professional competency requirements of another state or jurisdiction in which they are licensed, in lieu of West Virginia's.
