Professional Engineer Continuing Education (PDH) Requirements by State (2026)
Licensed Professional Engineers (PEs) must complete continuing education — usually measured in Professional Development Hours (PDH) — to renew their license. Requirements are set by each state licensing board and vary widely, from annual PDH minimums to no continuing education requirement at all. Compare requirements across all states below.

National Overview
Across the 50 states covered here, 42 require professional engineer continuing education to renew a license, and 8 have no mandatory CE-hour requirement. Among the states that do mandate CE, totals range from 15 to 36 hours per cycle (averaging about 27), and most run on a 2-year cycle.
The most commonly mandated subject is ethics, required in 19 of these states. Online CE is accepted in every state that requires it, though several cap self-study or independent-study hours. The national coordinating body is NCEES. Use the table below to compare each state's hours, cycle, and mandatory topics.
