North Dakota Real Estate Agent / Broker Continuing Education Requirements
Requirements Overview
The North Dakota Real Estate Commission requires 12 hours of continuing education per annual cycle, which runs from November 16 through November 15. The same 12-hour requirement applies equally to brokers, broker associates, and salespersons. Mandatory topics change from year to year as determined by the Commission — for example, the 2024-2025 cycle required DEI and Vacant Property/Scams topics, while the 2025-2026 cycle has no mandatory topics.
New licensees who completed the 90-hour pre-licensure course are exempt from CE at their first renewal. Those who took the 45-hour pre-licensure course must instead complete 15 hours of post-licensure education within one year. Licensees continuously licensed since January 1, 1969 are fully exempt, and non-resident/reciprocal licensees need only meet CE requirements in their home state.
If CE is not completed by November 15, licensees must renew as inactive to avoid disciplinary action. Reactivation from inactive status requires completing CE for each missed cycle, capped at 3 prior cycles (maximum 36 hours). Instructors may claim 1 CE credit per teaching hour, up to 50% of the requirement.

Exemptions
- New Licensee (First Renewal) — Salespersons first licensed in the current cycle year are exempt from CE for their first renewal. Also applies to newly licensed brokers who passed exams in current cycle.Those with 45-hour pre-licensure course must complete 15 hours post-licensure education instead
- Continuously Licensed Since 1969 — Licensees continuously licensed since January 1, 1969 are exempt from CE requirements.
- Non-Resident/Reciprocal — Non-resident and reciprocal licensees must meet CE requirements in their state of residence only.

Tips for North Dakota Real Estate Agents
- Check each year whether the Commission has designated mandatory topics — they change annually and some years have none.
- Complete all 12 hours before November 15; if you miss the deadline, you must renew as inactive and cannot practice until reactivation.
- Non-resident licensees only need to meet CE requirements in their home state — verify your reciprocal arrangement with the Commission.
- If you teach real estate courses, you can earn up to 6 hours of your 12-hour requirement through instructor credit.
