New Mexico Registered Nurse (RN) Continuing Education Requirements
Requirements Overview
The New Mexico Board of Nursing requires 30 contact hours of continuing education per biennial renewal cycle. CE must come from ANCC-accredited providers, and online courses are accepted. There are no mandatory topic requirements for standard RN renewal, giving nurses flexibility to choose courses relevant to their practice area.
New Mexico uses CE Broker as its official CE compliance tracking system. Courses completed through CE Broker-integrated providers are automatically reported, reducing the administrative burden of maintaining paper certificates. Nurses should verify their CE Broker account shows full compliance before submitting their renewal application.
Licenses expire on the last day of the licensee's birth month every two years, so each nurse has a personalized renewal deadline. New Mexico is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. APRNs have additional requirements beyond the base 30 hours, including pharmacology and pain management topics.
How You Can Complete Your CE
Provider Requirements
ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) accredited CE providers are accepted. New Mexico uses CE Broker for tracking CE compliance.
Tips for New Mexico RNs
- Set up your CE Broker account early and confirm your courses are reporting correctly. Automated tracking saves time, but only if the data is accurate.
- Your license expires on the last day of your birth month — not a statewide fixed date. Mark your calendar well in advance.
- Choose CE courses relevant to your practice area. While New Mexico has no mandatory topics for RNs, targeted education strengthens your skills and career.
- If you're an APRN, remember your additional 20 hours in specialty topics (including pharmacology and pain management) are separate from the base RN requirement.
