Requirements Overview

Montana repealed its continuing education requirements for nursing license renewal effective November 18, 2023. Prior to this change, registered nurses were required to complete 24 contact hours every two years. Now, the biennial renewal process requires no CE hours, no mandatory topics, and no competency demonstrations.

Despite the repeal, the Montana Board of Nursing continues to offer free optional CE modules through its Teachable platform. Eight modules totaling 15 contact hours cover topics including the role of the Board, delegation, the complaint process, Nurse Licensure Compact, licensing process, substance use disorder, scope of practice, and ethics.

RN licenses renew biennially, expiring December 31 every two years. Roughly half of licensees expire in even years and half in odd years.

Provider Requirements

Not applicable. Montana no longer requires CE for nursing license renewal. The Board offers free optional CE modules through the Montana Board of Nursing Teachable platform, approved by Montana Nurses Association (ANCC-accredited approver with distinction).
