Requirements Overview
Two of the 30 biennial hours are subject-specific: at least 1 hour must address ethics applicable to professional engineering, and at least 1 hour must cover Indiana statutes and rules governing the practice. The remaining hours are unrestricted by subject. Engineers initially licensed in the first year of a biennium need only 15 hours, while those licensed in the second year, or holding Inactive status, have no CE requirement for that biennium.
Up to 15 excess hours may be carried over into the following biennium. CE must be approved by an approved organization or the board, and distance learning is creditable under 864 IAC 1.1-15-4. One CE hour equals at least 50 minutes of instruction or contact time. Licensees need not obtain board authorization in advance, though the board may approve or deny courses at any time. The governing rule is 864 IAC 1.1-15-3.

Exemptions
- Inactive Status — A professional engineer holding Inactive status is not required to obtain any continuing education.
- Newly Licensed (Second Year Of Biennium) — A professional engineer initially licensed in Indiana in the second year of a biennium is not required to obtain any continuing education for that biennium.
- Newly Licensed (First Year Of Biennium) — A professional engineer initially licensed in the first year of the biennium is required to obtain only fifteen (15) hours of continuing education (partial reduction, not full exemption).

- Carry-over — Up to 15 excess CE hours earned in a biennium may be carried over to the next biennium.
- The biennium (renewal cycle) runs August 1 of an even-numbered year through July 31 of the next even-numbered year; PE licenses expire July 31 of even-numbered years.
